Malaysian Parliament to Hold Special Sitting on 5 May 2025 to Address Impact of U.S. Actions on Economy

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 April 2025 – The Dewan Rakyat will convene a Special Sitting on Monday, 5 May 2025, starting at 11.00 a.m., to discuss the impact of the United States’ imposition of reciprocal tariffs on all imports to its country on Malaysia’s economy.
The sitting, chaired by the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Dato' Johari Abdul, is held at the request of the Prime Minister and in accordance with Standing Order 11(3) of the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders. It aims to address pressing issues with significant implications for the public.

The agenda focuses on three key areas:
The impact of U.S. reciprocal tariffs on Malaysia’s economy.
The Government’s response, including short- and medium-term solutions and reviews of specific industrial policies.
Long-term economic planning to ensure Malaysia’s economic resilience amid global trade conflicts.
Ministers will provide briefings under Standing Order 14(1)(i), with Members of Parliament given the opportunity to seek clarifications and offer views.
The sitting will be broadcast live on the official Parliament of Malaysia YouTube channel.
