Malaysia Shines in Asian Physics Olympiad 2025 in Saudi Arabia — Closing Ceremony Tomorrow with High Hopes for Outstanding Results

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia 11 May - - The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is currently hosting the 25th edition of the Asian Physics Olympiad 2025 (APhO), which began on May 4 at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Dhahran, and will conclude tomorrow, May 12. The event is jointly organized by the Ministry of Education, the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), and the host university, with exclusive sponsorship from Saudi Aramco.

This edition continues Saudi Arabia’s successful hosting of international scientific events, most notably the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad held in July 2024, which attracted 333 participants from 90 countries. The APhO is the second-largest international science competition hosted by the Kingdom, underscoring its commitment to advancing education and global scientific excellence.

This year, 240 students from 30 Asian countries are competing in two intensive exams — theoretical and experimental — each lasting five hours and conducted under the supervision of the APhO International Board in accordance with rigorous academic standards.

Malaysia: A Strong Contender with High Hopes

Malaysia is participating with a distinguished student delegation, carefully selected through national training programs designed to prepare them for high-level scientific challenges. The country has built a reputation for excellence in international science competitions, supported by its focus on science education and research.

Malaysia’s performance in previous editions of the APhO has been impressive, and there is strong optimism that this year’s team will achieve outstanding results. The Malaysian delegation is also actively engaging in the Olympiad’s cultural and educational program, which includes visits to local scientific and cultural landmarks in the Eastern Province, fostering international exchange and collaboration.

Saudi Arabia Leading the Region in Scientific Talent Development

Saudi Arabia’s national team was selected and trained through an intensive program developed by Mawhiba in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Since joining the APhO in 2012, Saudi students have earned 16 medals and awards in this competition alone, as part of an impressive total of 864 international medals and recognitions.

Tomorrow’s closing ceremony will celebrate the achievements of all participating students, recognize the winners, and highlight the Kingdom’s growing role as a global center for innovation and scientific excellence.
